Mobile Plans

Getting a local mobile number is one of those little things that instantly makes you feel more settled. Whether it’s to call your landlord, order takeaway, or stay connected on school WhatsApp groups, having a reliable phone plan in Cyprus is a must.

The good news? Mobile coverage is strong, the sign-up process is straightforward, and there are plenty of options for expats and newcomers.

🛒 Prepaid vs Contract: What’s the Difference?

Cyprus offers both pay-as-you-go (prepaid) and monthly contract mobile plans. Which one you go for depends on how long you’ll be staying and how much data you use.

Prepaid SIM Cards:

Perfect for short-term visitors or your first few weeks after arriving.

  • No paperwork required

  • SIM cards are available at kiosks, supermarkets, or mobile stores

  • Top up online, via app, or with physical vouchers

These are super flexible and easy to get going. Ideal while you’re still getting your documents in order.

Contract Plans:

Great for longer stays, especially if you use a lot of data or want to bundle with home internet.

  • Typically include data, call minutes, and texts

  • Lower rates than prepaid over time

  • Require ID and proof of address

Some providers ask for a Cyprus residency document or bank account, but many expats are approved with just a passport and rental agreement.

📡 Main Mobile Providers in Cyprus

All major providers offer 4G (and growing 5G) coverage, especially in cities like Limassol. Here's a quick look at the main players:

1. Cyta (Cytamobile-Vodafone)

  • Reliable, island-wide coverage

  • Solid speeds and bundles

  • Slightly pricier, but good customer service

2. Epic

  • Excellent value plans

  • Strong 4G and 5G coverage

  • Flexible prepaid and postpaid options

  • English-friendly website and app

3. PrimeTel

  • Great bundle deals (mobile + internet + TV)

  • Popular among expats

  • Some locations may have less coverage than Cyta or Epic

4. Cablenet

  • Known for home internet, but offers mobile too

  • Competitive bundles

  • 4G+ network, expanding 5G

📶 Coverage & Speed

Coverage in urban areas like Limassol is excellent. 4G is standard and 5G is expanding fast, especially with Epic and Cyta.

If you live in a rural area or a village outside Limassol, it’s worth checking signal strength - most providers have coverage maps on their websites.

💳 How Much Do Plans Cost?

Here’s a rough guide (as of 2024)

Prepaid (light use):

  • 2GB - 5GB data plus local minutes

  • €10–15/month

Contract (mid range):

  • 10GB - 30GB data, unlimited calls/texts

  • €20–30/month

High Usage Plans:

  • Unlimited data, roaming, TV bundles

  • €40+/month

Some providers offer family plans or discounts for bundling with home internet.

📲 eSIMs & International Numbers

Most local providers now support eSIMs for newer phones. This is a great option if you want to keep your home country number active on the same device.

Apps like Revolut and Airalo also offer temporary international eSIMs, but they’re more suited to short visits.

🛠 Switching Providers or Porting Your Number

You can switch providers easily, and number portability means you can keep your Cyprus number when you move between companies.

Ask your new provider to handle the switch for you—they’ll usually take care of the paperwork.

✅ Summary: What to Do First

  1. Grab a prepaid SIM to get started quickly

  2. Compare contract options once you’re settled

  3. Check signal strength in your area if you’re in a village or suburb

  4. Consider bundling mobile with home internet for better deals

  5. Keep your passport and proof of address handy for contracts
